Description:
As professionals in the field of emotional health, we are not immune to the subjective and intersubjective reactions that can arise from our life experiences and the way we sometimes automatically respond in potentially activating situations. If left unexamined and not brought into our consciousness, these life themes (early maladaptive schemas) and coping modes can lead to frustration for both the client and the therapist, and to poor outcomes of therapeutic intervention. Emotional suffering activation during difficult moments in the office can undermine the robustness of even the most competent therapist. In an attempt to regain our stability and cope with emotional activations caused by our professional interactions, we may unexpectedly find ourselves on a familiar emotional trajectory, where acute reactive states trigger maladaptive coping modes in which we can avoid, fight, or submit to clients.
Reflective practice is similar to the concept of supervision but without the involvement of a supervisor or colleague. We can reflect as we analyze our practice in three time intervals: past, present, and future. When reflecting on the past, we consider what we did; how we and the client behaved; what the outcomes were; how we could have acted differently and where this could have led. As we get used to reflecting, it becomes easier to continue the process while with a client and therefore reflect on the present. Practice builds an ability to conduct a “stream of consciousness” reflection in the background of the mind while continuing to be attentive to the client. It might be easier for us to reflect on the present if we choose a simple framework that we can bring to mind without needing to refer to notes.
This program offers a way to work with our own mental patterns both in personal and professional contexts.
